“If the 2017 tax cuts expire, it will be the largest tax hike in U.S. history.”
This is one of Mike Lawler’s top refrains. My purpose today is not to highlight Lawler’s simplistic all-or-nothing argument, which ignores the fact that the benefits of the 2017 cuts were outweighed by lost revenue, that they mostly benefit the rich, and that there are lots of bipartisan options for fiscally responsible tax reform.
More important to point out during this Liberation Week, is that Mike Lawler already voted in favor of the largest tax hike in U.S. history. Lawler voted to give Trump full discretion on tariffs based on the pretense of a national emergency. And now we see the tragic consequences.

This tax will fall most heavily on lower-income households. And along with the DOGE cuts to critical government programs, will be used to pay for tax cuts favoring Elon Musk and his wealthy bros.
Meanwhile, Lawler continues to make the rounds defending Trump’s madness with calm assurance. This is all just part of a grand master plan, a negotiating tool that will lead to an economic boom. We must have faith, says the MAGA whisperer.
