Earth to Lawler

Gaslighting: the act or practice of grossly misleading someone especially for one’s own advantage

Merriam-Webster

Mike Lawler is gaslighting us with natural gas.

I’ve avoided this word until now. It’s trendy. We’re all gaslighters, apparently. But there’s no avoiding it with Mike Lawler, especially on Earth Day. Once again, Lawler branded the day as only he can:

Peel back the graphics and the sound bites, and you discover a man who is fanning the flames of our climate emergency.

Mike Lawler’s climate policy is to promote fracking and natural gas. He was a lobbyist for the natural gas industry, and has received substantial campaign funds from the fossil fuel industry. Of the 232 bills Lawler boasts about cosponsoring in his first 100 days this Congress, the only earth-related bill with any hope of advancing is the Protecting American Energy Production Act, which will protect the fracking industry, not the earth.

Lawler strongly opposed what is arguably the most significant climate legislation in history, the Inflation Reduction Act. And he is now actively engaged behind closed doors in a GOP budget reconciliation process that threatens to gut US climate policy and clean energy initiatives.

Yes, Mike is a member of the Climate Solutions Caucus. But as with so much else that is Lawler, this is window dressing. He is a member of nearly 50 caucuses. Take a look at the Climate Solutions Caucus website and form your own opinion of its impact. Its last news release was November of last year. The caucus staffers were reportedly briefed in February by the Business Council for Sustainable Energy. Their message: “American Sustainable Energy Technologies Are Ready to Meet Increasing Energy Demand.” I’m guessing that neither Lawler nor his staff got the briefing. Too busy working on the social media messaging.

There is no “all of the above” energy policy with this administration or its acolyte Mike Lawler. Trump has indeed declared a national emergency on energy policy. And so the Department of Interior celebrated Earth Day by establishing emergency permitting procedures for the rapid extraction of fossil fuel without environmental review. While Trump pauses wind projects to protect the wildlife. It all makes perfect sense.

Drill baby drill. Happy Earth Day, everybody!
